Hasami Ware

With roots stretching back over 400 years to Nagasaki Prefecture, Hasami ware (波佐見焼, Hasami-yaki) has long been celebrated as Japan's most functional ceramic tradition. Unlike the ornate porcelains of Arita, Hasami ware is prized for its clean lines, understated glazes, and everyday durability — making it a favorite of Japanese households for generations.

Our handpicked selection of Hasami pottery brings this enduring, minimalist Japanese tableware aesthetic directly to your table.

Hasami ware is known for its practical elegance, durability, and clean, contemporary aesthetic rooted in centuries of Japanese ceramic tradition. Originating in the Hasami region of Nagasaki Prefecture, it is typically made from high-quality porcelain clay that is fired at high temperatures, resulting in a strong yet lightweight body. The surface is often smooth and bright white or softly tinted, making it an ideal base for both minimalist designs and more expressive, modern patterns. Unlike more ornate ceramic styles, Hasami ware emphasizes usability, balancing beauty with everyday functionality.

Hasami ware is versatile in form and design, especially in tableware such as bowls, plates, and mugs that are designed to be stackable and easy to store. Many pieces reflect a contemporary lifestyle approach while still preserving traditional craftsmanship techniques passed down through generations of artisans. Decoration is often subtle, using geometric patterns, brushwork, or soft glazes that highlight the natural quality of the porcelain. This combination of simplicity, practicality, and refined craftsmanship has made Hasami ware popular both in Japan and internationally.

Hasami ware has a history that dates back over 400 years to the early Edo period, when ceramic production began to develop in the region under the influence of nearby porcelain centers such as Arita. The area’s rich deposits of high-quality clay and access to essential kiln resources made it an ideal location for pottery production. Initially, Hasami functioned as a supportive production hub for Arita ware, producing everyday utilitarian ceramics for domestic use while benefiting from the advanced porcelain techniques being developed in the region.

By the 17th and 18th centuries, Hasami established its own identity as a distinct ceramic tradition, specializing in practical, durable tableware for common households rather than elite or highly decorative pieces. This focus on functionality helped Hasami ware become widely used throughout Japan, especially during periods when demand for affordable, mass-produced ceramics increased. Over time, local kiln networks and family-run workshops refined production methods, allowing Hasami to scale efficiently while maintaining consistent quality.

In the modern era, Hasami ware has undergone a revival, blending traditional craftsmanship with contemporary design sensibilities. While still rooted in its heritage of everyday usability, modern artisans and manufacturers have introduced minimalist aesthetics, innovative glazing techniques, and modular designs suited for modern living. Today, Hasami ware is recognized internationally for its balance of tradition, practicality, and understated elegance.

1. Clay selection and preparation
High-quality porcelain clay is carefully selected, then purified, kneaded, and aged to remove impurities and improve workability.

2. Shaping the form
The prepared clay is shaped using methods such as wheel-throwing, jiggering, or slip casting, depending on the item (bowls, plates, cups, etc.).

3. Initial drying (leather-hard stage)
The formed pieces are left to dry until they reach a firm, leather-like consistency, making them easier to trim and refine.

4. Trimming and refining
Excess clay is trimmed away to refine thickness, balance, and symmetry, and to add details like foot rings.

5. First firing (bisque firing)
The pieces are fired at a lower temperature to harden them into a durable but porous state, preparing them for glazing.

6. Surface finishing and inspection
After bisque firing, each piece is smoothed, cleaned, and checked for defects before glazing.

7. Glazing application
A layer of glaze is applied by dipping, pouring, or spraying, giving the ware its characteristic smooth, glass-like surface after firing.

8. Decoration (if applicable)
Hand-painting or printed designs are added using traditional pigments such as cobalt blue or modern decorative techniques.

9.Final firing (glost firing)
The glazed pieces are fired at high temperatures, fusing the glaze to the body and creating strength, sheen, and color depth.

10. Quality control and packaging
Finished pieces are carefully inspected for consistency, then packaged for distribution while preserving their artisanal quality and durability.

1. Wash gently after use
Clean with warm water, mild dish soap, and a soft sponge. Avoid abrasive pads that can scratch the glaze.

2. Handle with care during washing
Support larger pieces with both hands to prevent accidental slipping or chipping.

3. Check dishwasher safety
If the piece is labeled dishwasher-safe, place it securely on the top rack. For hand-painted or delicate items, handwashing is preferred.

4. Avoid sudden temperature changes
Do not move directly from hot to cold environments (e.g., oven to cold water), as thermal shock may cause cracking.

5. Use microwave or oven cautiously
Only use if the manufacturer confirms it is safe. Avoid prolonged high-heat exposure unless specified.

6. Dry thoroughly before storage
Air dry or wipe with a soft cloth to prevent moisture buildup and water spots.

7. Stack carefully when storing
Place soft liners such as cloth, paper, or felt between stacked pieces to avoid scratches.

8. Store in a safe, stable space
Keep in a cabinet where pieces won’t be overcrowded or prone to knocking.
