Mashiko Ware

Mashiko Ware (Mashiko-yaki) is a highly regarded style of Japanese pottery originating from Mashiko Town in Tochigi Prefecture, famous for embodying rustic charm and the philosophy of the Mingei (Folk Craft) Movement.

Characterized by its sturdy, robust forms and thick feel, Mashiko ceramics utilize local, iron-rich clay, resulting in a distinctively coarse, earthy texture. Potters traditionally rely on natural glazes made from local resources like rice hull ash, creating signature finishes such as warm persimmon brown (kaki-yu) and soft, creamy white (nuka-jiro).

Popularized by the master potter and Mingei leader Shoji Hamada, Mashiko ware is celebrated for its simple, honest beauty and high functionality as everyday tableware.
