Description

Crafted by Japanese ceramicist Momoko Shiohata, this slipware square plate demonstrates mastery of traditional slip-decoration, with hand-applied surface patterns that vary subtly from piece to piece. The compact square format accommodates both functional table service and curated display. Its glazed surface withstands regular use while preserving the tactile, organic quality inherent to handmade ceramics. An exclusive, limited-run work rooted in contemporary Japanese pottery practice.

These square plates showcase Momoko Shiohata's command of traditional slipware - clay slip applied to leather-hard forms before firing to create distinctive surface patterns. The result is a lightweight, durable vessel with understated elegance. Its versatile scale and matte finish work equally well for plated service or as a standalone display piece, seamlessly merging Japanese ceramic heritage with modern dining practice.

Note:

Before using your new ceramic piece for the first time, we recommend soaking it in clean water for at least two hours. This allows the clay to fully absorb moisture, helping to prevent odors and stains from setting in.

Daily Care Instructions

Avoid leaving food or beverages in the vessel for extended periods (especially overnight), as moisture may seep through and leave water marks on surfaces. After use, be sure to dry the piece thoroughly to prevent any residual dampness.

On the Nature of Ceramics

Handcrafted ceramics naturally change over time, developing a richer patina with use. This gentle transformation is part of their unique charm. We hope this piece becomes a beloved part of your everyday life.

*We normally follow the estimated shipping timeline. There will be exceptions for some items depends on the availability. We apologize for the inconvenience, but we will contact you by email in that case.

About Momoko Shiohata:

Momoko Shiohata, a ceramic artist residing in Oyama City, Tochigi Prefecture, is renowned for her vessels that embody the very soil and atmosphere of Mashiko. She specializes in the traditional British technique called "Slipware," where she decorates the surface of the pottery with patterns drawn using keshōdo (slip) - a mixture of clay and water. This results in decoration that is simple yet full of vital beauty.

Shiohata insists on sourcing clay directly from the Mashiko area and personally performs the suibachi (elutriation) process to meticulously remove impurities. Her glazes are also handmade using local natural resources such as rice and rice hull ash from Mashiko. From raw material collection to forming and firing, nearly all steps are completed solely by her. Because of this dedication, her works not only carry the warmth of being handmade but also condense the texture of Mashiko's local environment and the passage of time, resulting in functional vessels imbued with the memory of the land.
